Why I Bring a UV Light to Every Notary Appointment

By Patricia Shabel, Red Carpet Mobile Notary & Apostille

As a mobile notary in Las Vegas, I start my day early. I put on my Red Carpet Mobile Notary & Apostille shirt, do my hair and makeup and make myself look fabulous and professional. Then I take your calls, in English or Spanish. We talk about what you need, we set a time, and I come to you. I always come with the attitude that I'm there to be of service and to help you with what you need, and I do my absolute best to arrive at the time we set, ready to take care of whatever needs to be taken care of.

How I got here

A company brought me to Las Vegas in January 2021. I had been working remotely for them during the pandemic, and they had opened a new office here. That September, the company closed, and I was left with no real direction. I was driving for Lyft and Uber, trying to figure out why I was in Las Vegas and what I was supposed to be doing. Then notary work presented itself. I had a background in real estate investing, and loan signings were in line with that. I had nothing else going on, so I decided to take a chance.

Serious documents, a lighter touch

Most of the time, notary and apostille work is for something serious: powers of attorney, trusts and wills, sometimes for someone in the hospital. So I bring my own sense of humor, not too much, just enough to lighten the situation. I also read the room. At a divorce signing, the couple often doesn't want to be there together, so I'm intentional, quick and careful with everyone there. Whatever the appointment, I make it a point that it's a great experience for everyone.

I also explain what I'm doing and why I'm doing it. That way, if anything comes up later, you'll know how to deal with it instead of wondering what happened.

My notary party trick

Here's the part people remember. Every state hides something on its driver's licenses and ID cards that only a UV light can see. When I check your ID, I show you what's on yours that you can't see with the naked eye. Little kids say "Wow," and adults and older clients are just as fascinated. I think it's fascinating, too, and whenever I get an ID from a new state, I look up what that state hides. It's how I verify your identification, and it entertains you a little at the same time.

Moments I remember

I've had so many wonderful clients. One couple had been together 51 years and were getting married. He was close to 80 and in a hospital bed in their living room, and their granddaughter called me to notarize the paperwork. I asked him if he was sure he wanted to go through with it, and I told her she could still back out. Then I said, "I'm not the notary. I'm the entertainment." We laughed and had a great time.

I've also come to several people on their deathbeds to notarize their wills, trusts and powers of attorney. Families are often nervous in those moments, which is understandable. I bring real care to the family, and most of all, I'm present with the person signing. A couple of those clients passed away within a day or two. I'm grateful and moved that I could be there with them for such an important moment in the cycle of life.

Apostilles for all 50 states

An apostille is an international notarization or authentication for documents that will be used in another country. If you're moving abroad, you may need a visa, residency and your birth certificate or other documents, possibly translated and notarized. I can provide all of that, for documents from every state in the U.S.

Every case is different, whether a document starts in Nevada and is going to Spain or to Mauritania. Countries in the Hague Convention follow one process, countries outside it follow a longer, more detailed one, and there are federal apostilles too. I find it fascinating.

I pick up your documents, notarize them if they need it, run them through the right state's process and bring them back to you. Most states have ways to expedite, so instead of weeks or months, I can get it done in as little as 24 hours, or the same day in some cases, depending on the state. I bring a level of excellence to it and make sure everything is done correctly. I guarantee my work: I've never had a problem with an apostille, but if there's ever an issue, I will fix it at no cost to you.

I'm also building an app that will track your documents through a chain of custody, like Amazon and FedEx tracking but just for apostilles, so you'll know which step your document is at and when to expect it back. For now, I keep you posted myself: where we are in the process, anything that comes up and how soon you'll have it back.
